Practical diagnostic

How do I know which type a verb is?

The infinitive is a clue, not a guarantee. Many -ать, -ять, and -еть verbs are Type I, while many -ить verbs are Type II, but exceptions exist in both directions. The safest check is to inspect finite forms.

Type I diagnostic ты: -ешь / -ёшь они: -ют / -ут читать: читаешь / читают
Type II diagnostic ты: -ишь они: -ят / -ат говорить: говоришь / говорят
Small steps

What you will learn

  1. What this module teaches Recognise and produce the Type II ending family without trusting the infinitive alone.
  2. The transparent pattern: говорить See the Type II ending family across a verified six-person paradigm.
  3. The full Type II ending family Use the full singular/plural table, including я and они variants.
  4. Why -ить is only a clue Classify a verb from its finite paradigm instead of a single infinitive spelling.
  5. Spelling of -у/-ю and -ат/-ят Apply Russian spelling after ж, ш, ч, and щ.
  6. First-person consonant alternations Recognise that the я form may have a different stem consonant from the rest of the Type II paradigm.
  7. Stress mobility Treat stress as lexical information that can interact with a consonant alternation.
  8. Irregular and defective behaviour Know when a high-frequency verb should not be forced into a regular table.
  9. Analyse diagnostic forms Classify an unfamiliar verb from finite evidence.
  10. Mastery check Review the six endings, diagnostics, spelling, stress, and lexical alternations.
