3.22 System Boundaries and Complete Mastery

Adjectives among participles, determiners, ordinals, adverbs, predicatives, and whole phrases

The adjective's place in the system

Long agreement morphology is shared by several categories, so form alone does not prove 'adjective'.

  • Lexical adjectives name properties or relations. Participles retain a verbal event relation; determiner/pronominal words identify or quantify reference; ordinals locate order; adverbs and predicatives do not agree like attributes.
  • Control point: Ask what semantic-syntactic work the word performs, then examine its paradigm.

Adjective versus participle

Participles combine verbal and adjectival properties: they agree like adjectives but encode action, voice, aspect, or temporal/result relations.

  • Dependents expressing agent, object, time, place, or manner support an eventive analysis. Lexicalised forms can shift toward stable adjective meanings.
  • Control point: The adjective-participle distinction can change interpretation and н/нн spelling. Use syntax and meaning together.

Determiners and pronoun-adjectives

Words such as э́тот, тот, весь, ка́ждый, мой, свой, како́й, кото́рый, and чей share agreement behaviour but organise reference, possession, quantity, or interrogation.

  • Their paradigms include special forms and deserve their own course; adjective agreement knowledge provides the structural bridge.
  • Control point: Do not add adjective endings to invariant его́, её, их. Their unchanged form does not mean the noun phrase lacks case.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Ordinal numerals

Ordinals answer кото́рый? and decline like long adjectives, but their lexical function is order rather than descriptive quality.

  • In a compound ordinal, the final ordinal component carries the agreeing form while preceding cardinal components retain their constructional shape.
  • Control point: Adjectival declension tells you how an ordinal changes; numeral syntax tells you what the expression means and which component changes.

Adjective, adverb, or category-of-state word

Forms in -о and simple comparatives can look identical across categories.

  • Test agreement target and syntactic function: an adjective predicates a subject's property; an adverb modifies an event; an invariant predicative presents a state, often with a dative experiencer.
  • Control point: Do not assign neuter gender merely because a word ends in -о. Find a nominative neuter controller first.

Architecture of a complete noun phrase

A phrase may contain a determiner, numeral, several adjectives, a participle, and a head noun, each contributing different information.

  • The governor establishes the phrase's case; the numeral may alter internal syntax; agreeing modifiers copy the appropriate profile.
  • Control point: Whole phrase: э́ти две но́вые, неда́вно изда́нные ру́сские кни́ги → об э́тих двух но́вых, неда́вно изда́нных ру́сских кни́гах. The comma marks an explanatory semantic grouping, not case.

Integrating predication, government, and comparison

Advanced adjective sentences can combine agreement with a predicate form, a governed complement, and a comparison standard.

  • Build each dependency separately, then verify the complete proposition.
  • Control point: One sentence can contain multiple cases for different reasons. Label each governor-to-dependent link instead of searching for a single sentence-wide case.

An editorial and dictionary workflow

Mastery includes knowing which questions grammar answers and which require lexical reference.

  • Use an academic spelling dictionary for established form, a modern explanatory/government dictionary for meaning and complements, a stress dictionary/audio source for pronunciation, and a corpus for contextual distribution.
  • Control point: A corpus shows usage, not automatically the norm; a dictionary gives norm, not every discourse nuance. Use sources for the questions they can answer.

Mixed error clinic

Correct the earliest wrong decision in the algorithm rather than patching the final letters.

  • Each error below belongs to a different layer: relationship, animacy, comparison, predication, category, or spelling.
  • Control point: If a correction changes meaning, state the intended reading before editing. Orthography and morphology are not detached from semantics.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
