The instrumental plural profile
Every long adjective takes -ыми/-ими with a plural instrumental head.
- Gender is neutralised. Nouns normally use -ами/-ями; irregular stems do not alter the adjective's regular choice.
- Control point: The ending is one of the most transparent in the system: construction → instrumental plural → diagnostic -ыми/-ими.
3.12 · The instrumental plural profile · table 1
| Family | Instrumental phrase | Ending |
| но́вый | но́выми телефо́нами | -ыми |
|---|
| си́ний | си́ними ру́чками | -ими |
|---|
| ру́сский | ру́сскими друзья́ми | -ими |
|---|
| хоро́ший | хоро́шими людьми́ | -ими |
|---|
| большо́й | больши́ми дома́ми | -ими, stressed |
|---|
Choosing -ыми or -ими
The diagnostic adjective families remain more reliable than a binary hard/soft label.
- Transparent hard adjectives use -ыми. True-soft, velar spelling-rule, sibilant, and stressed большо́й patterns use -ими.
- Control point: Pronounce the consonant pattern and stress as part of the word: рус-ски-ми, боль-ши́-ми. Do not insert an extra vowel into the spelling.

| Diagnostic | Instrumental plural | Example |

| большо́й — больша́я | больши́ми | больши́ми окна́ми |

Multiple means and channels
Plural instrumental can enumerate tools, vehicles, media, body parts, or repeated means.
- Plural is chosen because more than one entity is intended, not because instrumental itself implies multiplicity.
- Control point: Check whether Russian prefers a bare instrumental, a prepositional construction, or another lexical frame for the intended meaning.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

| Means | Example | Number meaning |
| tools | писа́ть цветны́ми карандаша́ми | several pencils |

| vehicles | е́хать ско́рыми поезда́ми | multiple journeys/trains |

| methods | реша́ть ра́зными спо́собами | different methods |
|---|
Accompaniment with groups
С + instrumental plural joins a subject with several companions, associated items, or grouped features.
- Irregular animate plurals remain noun vocabulary; adjective agreement is regular.
- Control point: Animacy does not affect instrumental. Both people and things use -ыми/-ими.

| Head | Phrase | Noun note |
| друзья́ | с хоро́шими друзья́ми | plural stem |

Plural roles, classifications, and states
Instrumental plural describes roles or resulting classifications for plural subjects after common copular verbs.
- Both adjective and predicate noun express instrumental plural. An adjective-only predicate may also take instrumental in the relevant construction.
- Control point: Copular agreement can be semantically and syntactically nuanced. Module 3.14 compares nominative, instrumental, long, and short predicate choices.

| Frame | Example | Profile |
| стать кем | Они́ ста́ли изве́стными врача́ми. | adj. + noun instr. pl. |

Plural spatial landmarks
Instrumental plural follows над, под, пе́ред, за, and ме́жду when several landmarks define a stable position.
- Adjective and noun agree throughout; lexical stress remains part of fluent production.
- Control point: A single между can coordinate singular or plural instrumental phrases: ме́жду но́вым до́мом и ста́рой шко́лой.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
3.12 · Plural spatial landmarks · table 1
| Preposition | Phrase | Relationship |
| ме́жду | ме́жду больши́ми дома́ми | between large houses |
|---|
| пе́ред | пе́ред но́выми зда́ниями | in front of new buildings |
|---|
| над | над си́ними моря́ми | over blue seas |
|---|
| под | под высо́кими дере́вьями | under tall trees |
|---|
| за | за ста́рыми гаража́ми | behind old garages |
|---|
Directed placement versus plural position
The accusative/instrumental spatial contrast persists with plural landmarks.
- Inanimate accusative plural uses -ые/-ие; instrumental plural uses -ыми/-ими. Meaning identifies endpoint versus stable relation.
- Control point: Movement occurring within a stable relation still uses instrumental: бе́гать ме́жду больши́ми дома́ми.
3.12 · Directed placement versus plural position · table 1
| Endpoint | Position | Morphological contrast |
| положи́ть под но́вые столы́ | лежа́ть под но́выми стола́ми | -ые → -ыми |
|---|
| зайти́ за ста́рые дома́ | быть за ста́рыми дома́ми | acc. → instr. |
|---|
| сесть за больши́е столы́ | сиде́ть за больши́ми стола́ми | endpoint → position |
|---|
Quantified phrases in instrumental
When a numeral phrase is instrumental, numeral, adjective, and noun all express instrumental plural.
- The hybrid nominative/accusative counting patterns disappear in the oblique cases.
- Numeral checkpoint: Numeral forms themselves require practice: двумя́, тремя́, четырьмя́, пятью́. The adjective step remains regular.

The long-adjective system on one grid
Mastery means deriving a form from a grammatical profile, not reciting rows without a sentence.
- Use но́вый as the transparent reference pattern, then map true-soft and spelling-rule families onto the same case architecture.
- Control point: This grid is a retrieval map, not a production algorithm. Start with the sentence relationship and head noun every time.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
