3.11 Instrumental Singular

Means, accompaniment, roles, states, spatial position, and movement contrasts

The instrumental singular profile

Instrumental relates an entity to an action or state as means, companion, role, property, or spatial reference.

  • Masculine and neuter long adjectives use -ым/-им. Feminine adjectives use -ой/-ей, with longer -ою/-ею variants available.
  • Control point: Instrumental is a relationship, not merely a 'tool case'. Learn its semantic network through complete constructions.

Masculine and neuter: -ым and -им

The same forms seen in dative plural now agree with a singular masculine or neuter head.

  • Transparent hard adjectives use -ым; true-soft and spelling-rule families use -им; stressed большо́й gives больши́м.
  • Control point: Use the noun to distinguish с но́вым дру́гом (instrumental singular) from к но́вым друзья́м (dative plural).

Feminine: -ой/-ей and -ою/-ею

The shorter forms dominate neutral modern prose; the longer variants are grammatical but stylistically marked or rhythmically motivated.

  • True-soft adjectives use -ей/-ею. Transparent hard and spelling-rule families use -ой/-ою as their paradigm dictates.
  • Control point: Recognise -ою/-ею confidently, but use -ой/-ей as the default unless genre, rhythm, or house style motivates the longer form.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Means and instrument

A means used to perform an action commonly appears in instrumental without a preposition.

  • The relationship can be a physical tool, vehicle, medium, body part, or manner-like means. Not every English 'with/by' maps mechanically to instrumental.
  • Control point: Learn the Russian construction as a phrase. English preposition labels are only rough meaning cues.

Accompaniment with с

С + instrumental expresses accompaniment, association, mixture, or a feature possessed together with its bearer.

  • The same preposition с can select genitive when it means 'from/off'. Meaning determines the case before agreement begins.
  • Control point: Store с кем/чем 'with' separately from с кого/чего 'from/off'. Their adjective endings expose different cases.

Role, profession, and resulting state

After быть in non-present tenses, стать, явля́ться, and several role constructions, instrumental presents a role, classification, or attained state.

  • A long adjective inside the predicate phrase agrees with its instrumental head noun; an adjective alone may also take instrumental after some copular frames.
  • Control point: Present-tense zero-copula predicates often use nominative or short forms. Module 3.14 compares the alternatives systematically.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Spatial position

Над, под, пе́ред, за, and ме́жду commonly take instrumental for stable position relative to a landmark.

  • The adjective describes the landmark and agrees with its instrumental form. The precise spatial meaning belongs to the whole prepositional frame.
  • Control point: Some spatial prepositions alternate with accusative for directed placement. Ask position or endpoint before selecting a case.

пе́редпе́ред ста́рым до́момin front of

ме́ждуме́жду мо́рем и го́родомbetween

Direction versus position

With под, за, and certain spatial frames, accusative marks a directed endpoint while instrumental marks resulting or stable position.

  • The verb's event structure and the spatial relation work together; simple 'motion verb = accusative' is too crude because motion can occur within a location.
  • Control point: Translate the spatial configuration and endpoint, not motion alone. Бе́гать под мо́стом is instrumental because the running occurs under the bridge.

Syncretism and whole-phrase analysis

Instrumental singular masculine/neuter adjectives equal dative plural adjectives; feminine forms overlap several other oblique cases.

  • The governor and noun ending must be read together. This is a general feature of Russian paradigms, not an exception to memorise away.
  • Control point: A form is correctly identified only when morphology, syntax, and meaning converge.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
