The dative singular profile
Dative commonly presents a participant as recipient, beneficiary, experiencer, target, or reference point.
- Masculine and neuter long adjectives share -ому/-ему. Feminine adjectives use -ой/-ей, while the noun supplies its own dative ending.
- Control point: The adjective copies the profile of the whole noun phrase. It does not make a person a recipient by itself.
3.09 · The dative singular profile · table 1
| Head noun | Diagnostic phrase | Ending |
| masculine | но́вому студе́нту | -ому/-ему |
|---|
| neuter | но́вому зда́нию | -ому/-ему |
|---|
| feminine | но́вой студе́нтке | -ой/-ей |
|---|
| plural | но́вым студе́нтам | Module 3.10 |
|---|
Masculine and neuter: -ому and -ему
Use the adjective's diagnostic family to choose the ending and preserve its spelling pattern.
- Transparent hard and stressed adjectives use -ому. True-soft adjectives use -ему; spelling-rule families show predictable -ому/-ему forms.
- Control point: Masculine and neuter are neutralised in the adjective ending; identify gender from the noun and its lexical form.

| Family | Masculine | Neuter |
| но́вый | но́вому до́му | но́вому окну́ |

|---|
| большо́й | большо́му го́роду | большо́му зда́нию |
|---|
Feminine: -ой and -ей
Feminine dative adjectives reuse forms seen in other singular oblique cases.
- The dative noun ending and the governor identify the case. True-soft си́ний gives -ей; transparent hard and common spelling-rule families give -ой or their predictable spelling form.
- Control point: Do not label -ой/-ей as dative automatically. Compare без но́вой кни́ги, к но́вой кни́ге, and о но́вой кни́ге.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Recipients and transferred themes
Giving, sending, showing, telling, and writing often combine a dative recipient with an accusative theme.
- Keep the two noun phrases separate: the recipient answers кому?; the transferred thing answers что? Agreement follows each head independently.
- Control point: Word order may move either phrase, but endings preserve the recipient-theme relationship.

| Sentence | Dative recipient | Accusative theme |

Dative-selecting verbs
Many verbs lexicalise a target or affected participant in dative rather than accusative.
- Store each verb with its question and a representative adjective phrase. English translation alone cannot reliably predict Russian government.
- Control point: A person's animacy does not make them accusative. Lexical government selects dative here.

| Verb frame | Example | Meaning |
| помога́ть кому | помога́ть но́вому колле́ге | help |
|---|
| звони́ть кому | звони́ть ста́рой подру́ге | telephone |

| ве́рить кому/чему | ве́рить хоро́шему врачу́ | believe/trust |

Experiencers without a nominative subject
Russian often presents the person experiencing a state in dative.
- Impersonal predicates and several constructions combine a dative experiencer with an invariant predicate or a grammatical subject elsewhere in the sentence.
- Control point: In нра́вится constructions, the liked thing controls the verb; the experiencer remains dative.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Target with к
К + dative marks movement, orientation, approach, or relation toward a target.
- It contrasts with в/на + accusative destination: к approaches or goes to a person/point, while в/на typically presents entry or attendance at a conventional place.
- Control point: A target need not be animate. К selects dative regardless of the head's animacy.

| Frame | Example | Relationship |
| к person | идти́ к но́вому врачу́ | toward/to the doctor |
|---|
| к building | подойти́ к большо́му до́му | approach the house |

| к time | к сле́дующей неде́ле | by/toward next week |
|---|
| contrast | идти́ в но́вую больни́цу | enter/go to hospital |

High-frequency meanings of по
По frequently selects dative for route, distribution, basis, channel, and conformity, but it has several constructions.
- Learn meanings as chunks rather than treating по as a single English preposition. In the singular, adjective and noun both show dative agreement.
- Control point: Other meanings of по can pattern differently. Verify the lexical construction rather than assigning dative mechanically in every phrase.

| Meaning | Example | English cue |
| along | идти́ по но́вой у́лице | along a new street |

| according to | по но́вому пла́ну | according to a new plan |

A whole-phrase verification pass
Dative form choice is safest when governor, head, adjective family, noun ending, and stress are checked in order.
- The visible adjective ending is only one layer. Several feminine forms are syncretic, and irregular nouns may obscure the otherwise regular pattern.
- Control point: Practise full frames aloud: к хоро́шему врачу́, not the isolated ending -ему.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
