3.07 Accusative Plural

Animacy selects between a known nominative form and a known genitive form

The two-way accusative plural rule

All plural adjective phrases divide by animacy, regardless of the singular noun's gender.

  • Inanimate accusative plural copies nominative plural. Animate accusative plural copies genitive plural. This rule applies to each agreeing long adjective and to the head noun.
  • Control point: Plural gender does not decide the ending. Ask whether the head noun is grammatically animate.

Inanimate: copy nominative plural

Objects denoting ordinary things, places, events, and abstract notions use -ые/-ие.

  • Because the form is syncretic with nominative plural, the verb and sentence structure identify it as accusative.
  • Control point: An unchanged form can still be accusative. Case is a syntactic role, not necessarily a visibly different ending.

Animate: copy genitive plural

People and most animals take -ых/-их with the genitive-plural noun form.

  • The adjective pattern is already known from Module 3.06. Accusative adds a syntactic use, not a new set of forms.
  • Control point: Animate agreement affects the whole phrase. *ви́жу но́вые студе́нтов mixes incompatible patterns.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Animacy belongs to the head noun

Adjectives do not carry an independent real-world animacy judgment; they copy the grammatical animacy of the head.

  • Some categories are conventional or context-sensitive. Learn a noun's normal animacy behaviour with examples, especially for collectives, organisms, toys, and personified referents.
  • Control point: Biology is not the sole test. Use the noun's grammatical pattern, and consult a dictionary/corpus for marginal lexical cases.

Irregular animate plurals

Irregularity normally sits in the noun; the adjective still uses ordinary -ых/-их.

  • Store frequent object chunks because they combine lexical noun forms with productive adjective agreement.
  • Control point: Correct adjective and noun independently: ма́леньк-их + дет-е́й.

Direct-object verbs and lexical case

A transitive verb supplies accusative only when its construction actually takes a direct object.

  • Learn verb and case frames together. Some near-synonyms or prefixed verbs select different complements, so meaning plus lexical government precedes agreement.
  • Control point: Agreement cannot choose a complement frame for the verb. Verify lexical government first, especially where Russian permits variation.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Plural destinations

В and на with movement toward endpoints select accusative; destination nouns are normally inanimate and therefore retain nominative-plural adjective forms.

  • Contrast the destination with a prepositional-plural location. The preposition is identical, so motion/location meaning and noun endings do the work.
  • Control point: Do not use animacy to explain destination endings. The heads are inanimate, so accusative plural happens to copy nominative plural.

Mixed phrases and coordination

Each coordinated noun phrase receives the accusative form appropriate to its own head.

  • A shared adjective is possible only when syntax and meaning allow it to modify the coordinated group. Otherwise repeat the modifier or restructure the sentence.
  • Control point: Do not force one ending across unlike heads. Agreement is local to the head-adjective relationship.

Case analysis under syncretism

Accusative plural may look nominative or genitive, so analysis must remain construction-based.

  • Use the predicate, semantic roles, animacy, and noun form. Word order can change without changing the cases.
  • Control point: The surface adjective form narrows the possibilities; syntax selects the actual case.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
