The unified plural pattern
In the plural, gender no longer creates different long-adjective endings.
- Genitive plural adjectives end in -ых or -их. The diagnostic family chooses the spelling; the head noun separately supplies its own genitive plural form.
- Control point: First form the adjective; then verify the noun. A regular adjective cannot repair an incorrect noun genitive plural.
3.06 · The unified plural pattern · table 1
| Family | Phrase | Ending |
| но́вый | но́вых домо́в / книг / о́кон | -ых |
|---|
| си́ний | си́них шарфо́в / руба́шек / море́й | -их |
|---|
| ру́сский | ру́сских те́кстов | -их |
|---|
| хоро́ший | хоро́ших люде́й | -их |
|---|
| большо́й | больши́х городо́в | -их, stressed |
|---|
Choosing -ых or -их
The choice follows the adjective's diagnostic pattern and the Russian spelling system.
- True-soft adjectives use -их. Velars and sibilants also lead to written -их even when their paradigms are not identical to true-soft си́ний.
- Control point: Do not call every -их adjective 'soft'. That shortcut predicts the wrong feminine and neuter forms for many spelling-rule adjectives.

| Diagnostic | Genitive plural | Reason |
| но́вый — но́вая | но́вых | transparent hard |

Absence in the plural
Нет selects genitive; intended reference selects singular or plural.
- The adjective makes the number contrast explicit even when a noun has an unusual or zero genitive-plural ending.
- Control point: Plural is never 'caused by negation'. The speaker chooses the number; нет supplies genitive to whichever noun phrase is intended.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Five and above
In basic nominative and accusative quantity phrases, 5+ selects genitive plural for both long adjective and noun.
- Numbers ending in 5-9 or 0, and the teens 11-14, use this pattern. In compound numerals, the final relevant numeral controls the form.
- Control point: Contrast 22 но́вых до́ма with 25 но́вых домо́в: the adjective looks the same, but the noun changes from genitive singular to genitive plural.
3.06 · Five and above · table 1
| Numeral | Phrase | Pattern |
| 5 | пять но́вых домо́в | adj. + noun gen. pl. |

| 10 | де́сять си́них ру́чек | adj. + noun gen. pl. |
|---|
| 14 | четы́рнадцать больши́х о́кон | teen pattern |

| 20 | два́дцать ру́сских слов | zero-ending numeral |

| 25 | два́дцать пять но́вых книг | final five controls |

Quantity words
Мно́го, ма́ло, не́сколько, ско́лько, and сто́лько commonly govern genitive plural noun phrases.
- A long adjective within the quantified phrase likewise appears in genitive plural. These chunks are productive across genders and lexical noun types.
- Control point: Words of imprecise quantity behave as governors. Do not try to make the adjective agree with the quantifier's apparent shape.
3.06 · Quantity words · table 1
| Quantifier | Example | Use |
| мно́го | мно́го интере́сных книг | a lot of |
|---|
| ма́ло | ма́ло свобо́дных мест | few / little |

| не́сколько | не́сколько но́вых студе́нтов | several |
|---|
| ско́лько | Ско́лько ру́сских слов? | how many |

| сто́лько | сто́лько ва́жных вопро́сов | so many |

Genitive prepositions and dependent reference
Plural source, separation, range, and reference frames retain ordinary adjective agreement.
- The preposition selects genitive plural because the intended head is plural. Multiple adjectives independently copy the same profile.
- Control point: A multiword preposition may still govern genitive. Store the whole frame, not only the final visible word.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
3.06 · Genitive prepositions and dependent reference · table 1
| Frame | Phrase | Interpretation |
| из | из но́вых райо́нов | from new districts |

| без | без серьёзных оши́бок | without serious errors |

| о́коло | о́коло ста́рых домо́в | near old houses |

Adjective regularity beside noun irregularity
Plural adjective endings are predictable even when the head noun changes stem or chooses an unexpected ending.
- Learn difficult noun plurals as lexical pairs, then attach the ordinary adjective form. This separates two sources of error instead of treating the entire phrase as irregular.
- Control point: Mark the adjective and noun separately during correction: хоро́ш-их is regular; люд-е́й must be retrieved from the noun lexicon.

| Dictionary noun | Genitive plural phrase | Noun issue |
| челове́к — лю́ди | хоро́ших люде́й | suppletion |

Syncretism: -ых/-их has more than one job
The same adjective form serves genitive plural, prepositional plural, and animate accusative plural.
- Case is recovered from governor, noun form, animacy, and meaning. This syncretism is useful: later modules reuse a form already mastered.
- Control point: Never name a case from the adjective ending alone. The whole construction supplies the analysis.

| Sentence | Case of adjective | Evidence |
| Нет но́вых книг. | genitive plural | нет + книг |

A production strategy for long quantity phrases
Build from the outside governor inward, checking adjective and noun as separate morphological tasks.
- This method remains stable with several modifiers, irregular nouns, and compound numbers.
- Control point: A complex phrase is not one giant exception. It is a sequence of small, verifiable decisions.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

| Step | Question | Example: 15 good young teachers |
| 1 | Which quantity pattern? | 15 → 5+ |
|---|
| 2 | Adjective case/number? | genitive plural |

| 3 | Which adjective families? | хоро́ших, молоды́х |

Genitive plural assessment
Use -ых/-их reliably while keeping difficult noun formation and quantity selection separate.
