3.05 Genitive Singular

Reference, absence, source, quantities two through four, and the sound of -ого/-его

The genitive singular profile

Once a singular noun phrase is genitive, every long adjective copies that case and the noun's gender.

  • Genitive commonly marks absence, a dependent relationship, source, separation, and the complement of many prepositions. Masculine and neuter adjectives share one set of endings; feminine adjectives use another.
  • Control point: Choose singular from intended reference, not from the trigger: нет кни́ги and нет книг are both genitive but differ in number.

Masculine and neuter: -ого and -его

Use the diagnostic family, not the dictionary ending alone, to choose the written vowel.

  • The transparent hard and stressed families use -ого. True-soft adjectives use -его. Spelling-rule families preserve their characteristic consonant and vowel pattern.
  • Control point: The endings are written -ого/-его even though standard pronunciation changes г to /v/. Keep spelling and sound as two linked facts.

Pronouncing written -ого/-его

In adjective endings, written г is normally pronounced /v/: the spelling records morphology, not a letter-by-letter sound.

  • Unstressed vowels also reduce in ordinary speech. The transcriptions below are broad guides; stress marks and careful audio remain the best learning supports.
  • Pronunciation checkpoint: Do not generalise /g/ → /v/ to every word ending in -ого: this is the grammatical ending rule, not a licence to respell or alter unrelated roots.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Feminine: -ой and -ей

Feminine genitive singular forms coincide with feminine dative, instrumental, and prepositional long forms in many paradigms.

  • Transparent hard, spelling-rule, and stressed adjectives normally show -ой; the true-soft family shows -ей. The noun ending and the governor identify the actual case.
  • Control point: An ending is evidence, not a complete case label. Read the preposition or verb and the noun ending as well.

Absence, reference, and source

A grammatical governor selects genitive; the adjective then agrees inside that phrase.

  • High-frequency frames should be stored as meaningful chunks. They make case selection automatic while the diagnostic adjective makes the ending visible.
  • Control point: With нет, number remains a meaning choice: нет свобо́дного ме́ста contrasts with нет свобо́дных мест.

Why 2, 3, and 4 create a split phrase

In nominative and inanimate accusative quantity phrases, 2-4 impose special counting syntax rather than ordinary genitive agreement.

  • The noun normally has genitive singular form. An adjective after the numeral follows a gender-sensitive pattern: masculine and neuter strongly favour genitive plural; feminine commonly uses nominative plural, with a genitive-plural variant available in many contexts.
  • Quantity checkpoint: Do not describe the entire phrase as simple 'genitive singular'. Numeral government and adjective agreement produce a hybrid pattern.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

Masculine and neuter after 2-4

For masculine and neuter heads, place a following long adjective in genitive plural while the counted noun is genitive singular.

  • This pattern also applies to compound cardinal numbers ending in 2, 3, or 4, except those ending in 12, 13, or 14. Animacy changes the accusative quantity pattern and should be learned from complete examples.
  • Control point: In an oblique case the numeral phrase regularises: к двум но́вым дома́м, с тремя́ но́выми слова́ми.

Feminine after 2-4: the useful norm and its variants

The most teachable neutral model is две но́вые кни́ги: nominative-plural adjective plus genitive-singular noun.

  • Genitive-plural adjectives also occur, especially across styles and lexical/prosodic conditions. An adjective placed before the numeral normally agrees with the quantified group as a plural unit.
  • Control point: Treat variation as controlled Russian, not as random disagreement. In your own neutral prose, use the high-frequency nominative-plural model after 2-4 with feminine nouns.

Stress, spelling, and whole-phrase verification

A correct ending can still sound wrong if the lexical stress pattern or noun stress has not been learned.

  • Read from governor to head noun, then back through every modifier. Preserve spelling families and the /v/ pronunciation of -ого/-его while keeping lexical stress visible.
  • Control point: Say the complete phrase, not an isolated adjective ending. Agreement becomes usable when governor, adjective, and noun are retrieved together.
  • Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
