What selects accusative singular
Accusative marks many direct objects and endpoints after prepositions such as в and на.
- The adjective inherits accusative from the noun phrase. Gender and animacy then determine whether the form is distinctive or syncretic with nominative/genitive.
- Control point: Case is a syntactic relation, not an ending shape. An unchanged adjective can still be accusative.
3.04 · What selects accusative singular · table 1
| Head type | Pattern | Example |
| masc. inanimate | = nominative | ви́жу но́вый дом |
|---|
| masc. animate | = genitive | ви́жу но́вого студе́нта |
|---|
| feminine | -ую/-юю | чита́ю но́вую кни́гу |
|---|
| neuter | = nominative | ви́жу но́вое зда́ние |
|---|
Feminine -ую and -юю
Feminine accusative singular has a distinctive long-adjective ending.
- Hard and spelling-rule families normally use -ую; genuinely soft adjectives use -юю. Form the noun's -у/-ю separately.
- Control point: Feminine animacy does not create a second adjective ending in the singular: ви́жу но́вую кни́гу / но́вую студе́нтку.
3.04 · Feminine -ую and -юю · table 1
| Nominative | Accusative | Phrase |
| но́вая кни́га | но́вую | чита́ю но́вую кни́гу |
|---|
| си́няя ру́башка | си́нюю | покупа́ю си́нюю ру́башку |
|---|
| ру́сская газе́та | ру́сскую | чита́ю ру́сскую газе́ту |
|---|
| хоро́шая иде́я | хоро́шую | обсужда́ю хоро́шую иде́ю |
|---|
| больша́я су́мка | большу́ю | беру́ большу́ю су́мку |
|---|
Neuter accusative equals nominative
Neuter long adjectives do not change form between nominative and accusative singular.
- The transitive verb, word order, and sentence relation identify the object.
- Control point: Do not add an ending merely to make case visible. Syncretism is part of the grammar.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
3.04 · Neuter accusative equals nominative · table 1
| Nominative phrase | Accusative phrase | Surface form |
| но́вое окно́ откры́то | открыва́ю но́вое окно́ | unchanged |
|---|
| си́нее мо́ре шуми́т | ви́жу си́нее мо́ре | unchanged |
|---|
| хоро́шее ме́сто свобо́дно | зна́ю хоро́шее ме́сто | unchanged |
|---|
| большо́е зда́ние стои́т | ви́жу большо́е зда́ние | unchanged |
|---|
Masculine inanimate equals nominative
An inanimate masculine direct object keeps the nominative adjective form.
- This applies across diagnostic families. The noun itself also usually remains nominative-shaped.
- Control point: Animate/inanimate is grammatical, but ordinary objects and abstractions are inanimate.
3.04 · Masculine inanimate equals nominative · table 1
| Family | Object phrase | Form source |
| hard | покупа́ю но́вый стол | но́вый = nom. |
|---|
| soft | беру́ си́ний каранда́ш | си́ний = nom. |
|---|
| velar | изуча́ю ру́сский язы́к | ру́сский = nom. |
|---|
| sibilant | нахожу́ хоро́ший слова́рь | хоро́ший = nom. |
|---|
| stressed | посеща́ю большо́й музе́й | большо́й = nom. |
|---|
Masculine animate copies genitive
Animate masculine direct objects use -ого/-его forms in the adjective.
- The written г in -ого/-его is normally pronounced /v/ in standard Russian adjective endings.
- Spelling-pronunciation split: Write г but pronounce /v/ in these endings. The noun's genitive-shaped form is a separate agreement target.

| Nominative | Accusative animate | Approximate sound cue |
| но́вый студе́нт | но́вого студе́нта | -ово |
|---|
| си́ний попуга́й | си́него попуга́я | -ево |
|---|
| ру́сский писа́тель | ру́сского писа́теля | -ово |
|---|
| хоро́ший врач | хоро́шего врача́ | -ево |
|---|
| большо́й медве́дь | большо́го медве́дя | -ово |

Grammatical animacy at the edges
Animacy is a lexical-grammatical classification, not a live/non-live test applied from scratch.
- People and animals are normally animate. Some lexical classes, metaphors, games, toys, and collective labels require dictionary or construction knowledge.
- Control point: When intuition and dictionary paradigms conflict, grammatical evidence wins.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
3.04 · Grammatical animacy at the edges · table 1
| Referent | Typical pattern | Example |
| person | animate | ви́жу но́вого врача́ |
|---|
| animal | animate | ви́жу ма́ленького кота́ |
|---|
| plant | normally inanimate | ви́жу ста́рый дуб |
|---|
| doll | often animate grammatically | ви́жу но́вого пупса |
|---|
| chess piece | lexically variable by noun/use | store the exact noun frame |
|---|
Direct-object verb frames
A verb's government and meaning establish the object relation before agreement is formed.
- Store verbs with case questions and representative adjective-noun phrases, not English translations alone.
- Control point: Do not assume every English direct object maps mechanically to Russian accusative; learn Russian verb frames lexically.
3.04 · Direct-object verb frames · table 1
| Verb | Frame | Example |
| ви́деть | кого́? что? | ви́деть но́вого студе́нта |
|---|
| чита́ть | что? | чита́ть интере́сную кни́гу |
|---|
| знать | кого́? что? | знать хоро́шего врача́ |
|---|
| люби́ть | кого́? что? | люби́ть ру́сскую литерату́ру |
|---|
| покупа́ть | что? | покупа́ть но́вый слова́рь |
|---|
Destination with в and на
Accusative presents a place as the endpoint or target of directed movement.
- Contrast the endpoint with the prepositional location already learned. The adjective and noun both change where their paradigms require it.
- Control point: Directed motion does not automatically require accusative; the phrase must construe the place as endpoint.
3.04 · Destination with в and на · table 1
| Destination | Location | Contrast |
| иду́ в но́вую шко́лу | учу́сь в но́вой шко́ле | to vs. in |
|---|
| е́ду в большо́й го́род | живу́ в большо́м го́роде | goal vs. setting |
|---|
| иду́ на интере́сный уро́к | сижу́ на интере́сном уро́ке | to vs. at |
|---|
| кладу́ на ста́рый стол | лежи́т на ста́ром столе́ | onto vs. on |
|---|
Subject, object, and word order
Russian word order is flexible, so endings and animacy help identify syntactic roles.
- A nominative subject and accusative object can appear in several orders. Masculine inanimate syncretism may leave morphology ambiguous, requiring context and information structure.
- Control point: Do not equate first position with subject. Read the whole agreement and government pattern.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

| Sentence | Subject | Object |
| Но́вый студе́нт чита́ет ста́рую кни́гу. | но́вый студе́нт | ста́рую кни́гу |
|---|
| Ста́рую кни́гу чита́ет но́вый студе́нт. | но́вый студе́нт | ста́рую кни́гу |
|---|
| Ма́ленького кота́ ви́дит де́вочка. | де́вочка | ма́ленького кота́ |
|---|
| Но́вый стол закрыва́ет ста́рый шкаф. | context may be needed | both forms syncretic |
