Plural agreement neutralises gender
In the plural, one adjective form serves masculine, feminine, and neuter head nouns.
- The adjective still agrees in number and case, but plural endings do not display gender. Noun gender remains a lexical property; it is simply not overt in these adjective endings.
- Control point: Plural does not mean 'ignore the noun'. The noun still controls number and case, and its plural stem may be irregular.
3.02 · Plural agreement neutralises gender · table 1
| Singular | Plural phrase | What disappeared |
| но́вый дом | но́вые дома́ | masculine marking |
|---|
| но́вая кни́га | но́вые кни́ги | feminine marking |
|---|
| но́вое окно́ | но́вые о́кна | neuter marking |
|---|
The hard ending -ые
Transparent hard stems take nominative plural -ые.
- The same ending combines with nouns of all three genders. Keep the adjective stem and noun plural formation as separate decisions.
- Control point: Adjective -ые does not predict the noun ending: дома́, кни́ги, and о́кна all take the same adjective form.
3.02 · The hard ending -ые · table 1
| Adjective | Plural | Phrase |
| но́вый | но́вые | но́вые дома́ |
|---|
| ста́рый | ста́рые | ста́рые кни́ги |

| кра́сный | кра́сные | кра́сные я́блоки |
|---|
| интере́сный | интере́сные | интере́сные зада́ния |
|---|
The genuinely soft ending -ие
Soft-family adjectives take nominative plural -ие.
- Use the stored diagnostic family: си́ний - си́няя - си́нее - си́ние. The plural ending is shared across head-noun genders.
- Control point: Written -ие represents plural agreement; preserve the /j/-related transition in careful pronunciation.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

| Adjective | Plural | Phrase |
| си́ний | си́ние | си́ние моря́ |
|---|
| ле́тний | ле́тние | ле́тние дни |
|---|
| ра́нний | ра́нние | ра́нние поезда́ |
|---|
| после́дний | после́дние | после́дние страни́цы |
|---|
Spelling-rule plurals also use -ие
After г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, щ, Russian writes и rather than ы in this ending position.
- The visible plural -ие groups together genuinely soft adjectives and spelling-rule families, even though their singular and oblique diagnostics differ.
- Control point: Plural -ие alone cannot identify the full family. Keep diagnostic singular forms active.

| Family | Plural | Diagnostic contrast |
| velar | ру́сские кни́ги | ру́сского |

| sibilant | хоро́шие лю́ди | хоро́шего |

| stressed sibilant | больши́е города́ | большо́го |
|---|
| soft | си́ние моря́ | си́него |
|---|
Stress and irregular noun plurals
Agreement regularity does not regularise a noun's plural stem or stress.
- Choose the adjective form and noun plural independently, then say the entire phrase with lexical stress.
- Control point: Store frequent noun plurals with an adjective phrase; this practises two paradigms without confusing their sources.
3.02 · Stress and irregular noun plurals · table 1
| Singular phrase | Plural phrase | Noun change |
| но́вый го́род | но́вые города́ | stress + -а |
|---|
| хоро́ший друг | хоро́шие друзья́ | stem + -ья |

| ма́ленький ребёнок | ма́ленькие де́ти | suppletion |
|---|
| большо́й челове́к | больши́е лю́ди | suppletion |
|---|
| но́вый учи́тель | но́вые учителя́ | lexical -я |
|---|
Plural-only and indeclinable nouns
Adjective agreement can reveal grammatical information that the noun itself does not display.
- Plural-only nouns require plural modifiers. Indeclinable nouns may still distinguish singular and plural through agreement and context.
- Control point: The unchanged noun form does not make agreement optional: одно но́вое такси́, два но́вых такси́, но́вые такси́.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.

| Noun type | Phrase | Evidence |
| plural-only | но́вые брю́ки | plural adjective |

| plural-only | дороги́е часы́ | plural adjective |

| indeclinable plural | но́вые такси́ | plural adjective/context |

| indeclinable singular | но́вое такси́ | neuter singular adjective |

Several adjectives in one phrase
Every coordinated or stacked adjective agrees with the same head noun.
- Agreement is repeated on each adjective. Meaning determines whether descriptions are coordinated as parallel properties or form a nested classification.
- Control point: Comma choice belongs partly to syntax and meaning; adjective agreement remains plural on every modifier either way.
3.02 · Several adjectives in one phrase · table 1
| Structure | Example | Interpretation |
| stacked | но́вые ру́сские кни́ги | new members of the Russian-book class |
|---|
| coordinated | но́вые, интере́сные кни́ги | two parallel descriptions |
|---|
| contrast | ста́рые и но́вые дома́ | two adjective groups |
|---|
| three modifiers | больши́е све́тлые уче́бные ко́мнаты | size + quality + function |
|---|
Plural subjects and long predicates
A long adjective can be an attribute or part of a nominal predicate.
- In the present tense, Russian normally omits the copula быть. Predicate adjectives still agree with the plural subject.
- Control point: Word order and intonation help distinguish an attributive group from a predicate, but morphology can be identical.
3.02 · Plural subjects and long predicates · table 1
| Function | Example | Analysis |
| attribute | Но́вые дома́ высо́кие. | но́вые modifies дома́ |
|---|
| long predicate | Дома́ но́вые. | но́вые characterises subject |
|---|
| plural predicate | Кни́ги интере́сные. | plural nominative |
|---|
| with verb | Но́вые кни́ги лежа́т здесь. | plural verb agrees with subject |
|---|
Singular-to-plural transformation strategy
Transform the head noun and every agreeing word, then restore lexical noun stress.
- Do not change only the final word. A complete noun phrase is an agreement network.
- но́вый дом → но́вые дома́
- но́вая кни́га → но́вые кни́ги
- но́вое окно́ → но́вые о́кна
- си́нее мо́ре → си́ние моря́
- хоро́ший друг → хоро́шие друзья́
- большо́й го́род → больши́е города́
- Retrieval method: Say the singular and plural as a contrast pair. This strengthens gender in the singular and gender-neutral agreement in the plural.
- Retrieval checkpoint: Pause and reconstruct the diagnostic forms from the last three lessons without looking, then check what you missed.
