2.11 Instrumental Singular

Means, accompaniment, roles, states, spatial relations, and spelling after sibilants

The instrumental meaning network

Instrumental construes an entity as a means, companion, role, state, spatial reference point, or other accompanying circumstance.

  • One case, related construals: Do not reduce instrumental to English 'with'. Some uses have no preposition, and с + instrumental specifically marks accompaniment.

Masculine and neuter -ом/-ем

Hard stems normally take -ом; soft and /j/-related stems take -ем, with lexical stress.

  • Ё: Write словарём and путём with ё. Ё signals the stressed /jo/ vowel and should remain visible in learning material.

Spelling after sibilants and ц

After ж, ш, ч, щ, and ц, stressed and unstressed instrumental endings are written differently.

  • The spelling encodes stress and orthographic convention. Do not write *врачём or *товарищом in these standard forms.
  • Separate layers: First identify the instrumental and the stem. Then apply the after-sibilant/ц spelling rule according to stress.

Feminine -ой/-ей and long variants

Hard -а nouns usually take -ой; soft -я and -ия nouns take -ей, with stress-sensitive spelling after sibilants and ц.

  • Long -ою/-ею variants are grammatical: кни́гою, землёю, Мари́ею. They are more common in literary, poetic, rhythmic, or stylistically elevated contexts; -ой/-ей is the neutral productive target.
  • Spelling: душо́й but зада́чей follows the same stressed/unstressed contrast seen in masculine врачо́м versus то́варищем.

Feminine -ь and irregular singulars

Feminine soft-sign nouns take -ью; several high-frequency irregulars expose extended stems.

  • The cluster in но́чью is one syllable at the ending; ь marks the transition and consonant quality rather than adding its own sound.
  • Store whole forms: ма́терью, до́черью, путём, вре́менем, and и́менем are frequent enough for direct retrieval.

Tools and means

Bare instrumental marks an instrument, medium, vehicle, or manner by which an action is carried out.

  • Compare е́хать по́ездом with е́хать на по́езде. Instrumental construes the train as means; на + prepositional uses a conventional transport frame. Both are normal.
  • No с for an instrument: писа́ть ру́чкой means using a pen. с ру́чкой means being accompanied by or possessing a pen in context, not necessarily using it.

Accompaniment with с

с + instrumental means together with; с + genitive means from or off.

  • The expanded со appears for pronounceability in certain clusters and lexical frames: со столо́м, со шко́лой, со мной. It governs the same case as с in the intended construction.
  • Minimal pair: с рабо́той and с рабо́ты differ only in case ending but express accompaniment/association versus source.

Profession, role, and predicate instrumental

After быть in past/future and after verbs of becoming or working as, Russian commonly uses instrumental for the role or state.

  • Nominative predicates remain possible in some identificational and stylistic environments, but instrumental is the core learner target for temporary roles, change, and predicates after past/future быть.
  • Time contrast: Я студе́нт now; Я был студе́нтом last year. The case contrast is constructional, not simply 'person versus object'.

Instrumental prepositions and position

над, под, пе́ред, за, and ме́жду use instrumental for a static spatial relation or reference point.

  • With dynamic placement, под and за can govern accusative: положи́ть кни́гу под стол. Static location uses instrumental: кни́га лежи́т под столо́м.
  • Motion is not enough: The contrast is endpoint/path placement versus static relation: за дом 'to behind the house' versus за до́мом 'behind the house'.

Instrumental singular assessment

Build the form, then explain the instrumental construal or preposition.

  • Assessment
  • Form: с + брат, музе́й, учи́тель, Мари́я, дверь.
  • Choose spelling: врачо́м / врачём; то́варищом / то́варищем.
  • Contrast: He is a doctor / He was a doctor.
  • Contrast с рабо́той and с рабо́ты.
  • Choose cases: положи́ть под стол; лежа́ть под столом.
  • Answers and explanations
  • с бра́том, музе́ем, учи́телем, Мари́ей, две́рью.
  • врачо́м; то́варищем.
  • писа́ть ру́чкой; е́хать по́ездом.
  • Он врач; Он был врачо́м.
  • with/associated with the work, instrumental; from work, genitive.
  • Accusative marks the placement goal; instrumental marks the static position.
  • Ready signal: Continue when instrumental means more than a translated 'with' and you can keep tools, companions, roles, and spatial reference points distinct.
  • Build: write with a pen; travel by train.
