The dative meaning network
Dative commonly profiles an endpoint in the human or conceptual domain: a recipient, target, experiencer, or entity toward which something is oriented.
- Case is relational: Dative does not simply translate English 'to'. The governing verb, preposition, or construction selects the role.

Masculine and neuter endings -у and -ю
Hard stems normally take -у; soft, -й, and /j/-related stems take -ю.
- The spelling -ию in зда́нию reflects the -ие stem family. Do not reduce it to a guessed *зданью in neutral standard usage.
- Stress: Compare бра́ту, учи́телю, but врачу́ and окну́. The ending family is regular while stress remains lexical.

-а and ordinary -я usually become -е; -ия and feminine -ь take -и.
- Useful comparison: к неде́ле but *к Мари́е is wrong for Мари́я: ordinary -я takes -е; exact -ия takes -ии, giving к Мари́и.

Transfer: recipient plus theme
Many transfer verbs combine a dative recipient with an accusative thing transferred.
- The recipient is not a direct object simply because a person is affected. Russian marks the two roles separately: кому? dative, что? accusative.
- Role map: agent nominative → transferred theme accusative → recipient dative. Word order may change, but case keeps the roles visible.
09.04 Transfer: recipient plus theme
| Sentence | Dative recipient | Accusative theme |
| Я дал бра́ту кни́гу. | бра́ту | кни́гу |
|---|
| Она́ посла́ла А́нне письмо́. | А́нне | письмо́ |
|---|
| Мы показа́ли студе́нту музе́й. | студе́нту | музе́й |
|---|
| Врач дал ребёнку ле́карство. | ребёнку | ле́карство |
|---|
Communication targets
Russian commonly marks the person addressed, called, written to, or shown something with dative.
- English 'call someone' has a direct object, but Russian звони́ть governs dative: звони́ть бра́ту, not *звони́ть бра́та.
- Store the question frame: звони́ть кому? and слу́шать кого? что? belong to different government patterns even if English uses a direct object for both.
09.05 Communication targets
| Verb frame | Example |
| писа́ть кому? | писа́ть А́нне |
|---|
| звони́ть кому? | звони́ть врачу́ |
|---|
| говори́ть кому? | говори́ть студе́нту |
|---|
| отвеча́ть кому? | отвеча́ть учи́телю |
|---|
| объясня́ть кому? что? | объясня́ть ребёнку пра́вило |
|---|
| показа́ть кому? что? | показа́ть дру́гу фотографи́ю |

Common verbs that govern dative
Government is lexical; meaning clusters help memory but do not replace a dictionary frame.
- Some verbs take more than one complement: сове́товать студе́нту кни́гу has a dative advisee and an accusative recommendation. Learn the entire frame.
- No universal translation: English at, to, for, or a bare object may correspond to Russian dative depending on the governing verb.
09.06 Common verbs that govern dative
| Verb | Example | Meaning |
| помога́ть | помога́ть бра́ту | help |
|---|
| меша́ть | меша́ть студе́нту | hinder/disturb |

| сле́довать | сле́довать пла́ну | follow |
|---|
| улыба́ться | улыба́ться ребёнку | smile at |

Experiencer constructions
A person who experiences a state can appear in dative even when English makes that person the subject.
- In нравится constructions, the liked thing is nominative and controls singular/plural agreement: нра́вится кни́га, нра́вятся кни́ги. The experiencer stays dative.
- Avoid English remapping: Do not turn А́нне into a nominative subject merely because English says 'Anna likes'. Analyse the Russian construction.
09.07 Experiencer constructions
| Russian | Dative experiencer | Structure |
| А́нне хо́лодно. | А́нне | 'It is cold to Anna.' |

Age, necessity, permission, and possibility
Dative marks the person for whom an age, obligation, permission, or possibility holds.
- лет is the genitive plural of год in age expressions after five and most larger numerals. The dative noun marks the age-holder; the internal numeral phrase follows quantity grammar.
- Construction first: Студе́нту ну́жно is not a missing nominative sentence. Dative is the standard experiencer/obligation frame.

К and core uses of по
к marks approach or orientation toward; по has several dative constructions that must be learned by meaning.
- The expanded form ко appears before some clusters and in lexicalised frames: ко мне, ко вре́мени, ко вторни́ку. It is phonological packaging, not a different case.
- Polysemy warning: Do not translate every по as 'along'. Store по пла́ну, по телефо́ну, and по у́лице as separate related frames.
