The central plural animacy rule
Plural gender no longer determines the accusative shape; animacy does.
- This is why genitive plural came first. The learner can now build rather than memorise: де́ти → genitive plural дете́й → accusative plural ви́жу дете́й.
- Algorithm: choose accusative plural → determine grammatical animacy → copy nominative plural if inanimate or genitive plural if animate
07.01 The central plural animacy rule
| Noun class | Accusative plural equals | Example |
| inanimate | nominative plural | ви́жу столы́, кни́ги, о́кна |
|---|
| animate | genitive plural | ви́жу студе́нтов, же́нщин, дете́й |
|---|
Inanimate nouns copy nominative plural
All genders use the already-known nominative plural form when the noun is grammatically inanimate.
- The form may still be accusative although it looks nominative. Мы посеща́ем города́ has a direct object; Города́ расту́т has a subject.
- Case from relation: Syncretism does not erase case. The verb and semantic role tell you which cell the shared form occupies.
07.02 Inanimate nouns copy nominative plural
| Gender / type | Nominative plural | Accusative phrase |
| masculine | столы́ | ви́жу столы́ |
|---|
| masculine lexical -а | города́ | посеща́ю города́ |
|---|
| feminine | кни́ги | покупа́ю кни́ги |
|---|
| neuter | о́кна | открыва́ю о́кна |
|---|
| irregular inanimate | де́ревья | ви́жу дере́вья |
|---|
Animate nouns copy genitive plural
The rule applies across gender and across regular or irregular plural stems.
- Feminine singular did not reveal animacy, but plural does: ви́жу же́нщин, not *ви́жу же́нщины.
- One rule, many shapes: The accusative does not add its own plural ending here. It selects a form already present elsewhere in the paradigm.
07.03 Animate nouns copy genitive plural
| Nominative plural | Genitive plural | Accusative phrase |
| студе́нты | студе́нтов | ви́жу студе́нтов |
|---|
| геро́и | геро́ев | зна́ю геро́ев |
|---|
| же́нщины | же́нщин | встреча́ю же́нщин |
|---|
| ло́шади | лошаде́й | ви́жу лошаде́й |
|---|
| де́ти | дете́й | слу́шаю дете́й |
|---|
| друзья́ | друзе́й | приглаша́ю друзе́й |
|---|
Grammatical animacy at the edges
Plural morphology is the best diagnostic for nouns whose meaning and grammar do not line up transparently.
- Some nouns vary by sense, register, or specialist usage. When the plural accusative is uncertain, consult a dictionary or corpus example instead of extending a biological rule.
- Diagnostic equation: If accusative plural = genitive plural, the noun is grammatically animate in that use. If accusative plural = nominative plural, it is inanimate.
07.04 Grammatical animacy at the edges
| Animate pattern | Inanimate pattern |
| ви́жу ку́кол / матрёшек | ви́жу расте́ния / дере́вья |
|---|
| бе́ру коне́й (chess pieces) | организу́ю гру́ппы |
|---|
| вспомина́ю поко́йников | ви́жу тру́пы |
|---|
| рису́ю персона́жей | изуча́ю наро́ды |
|---|
Plural direct objects and word order
Case morphology keeps subject and object roles visible even when Russian rearranges the sentence.
- With inanimate nouns, case forms can coincide and context does more work. With animate nouns, genitive-like accusative often makes the object overtly distinct.
- Do not translate order mechanically: Russian word order highlights old/new information and contrast. Determine grammatical relations before imposing English order.
07.05 Plural direct objects and word order
| Sentence | Subject | Object |
| Студе́нты чита́ют кни́ги. | студе́нты (nom.) | кни́ги (acc. inan.) |
|---|
| Кни́ги чита́ют студе́нты. | студе́нты (nom.) | кни́ги (acc. inan.) |
|---|
| Дете́й слу́шают учителя́. | учителя́ (nom.) | дете́й (acc. anim.) |
|---|
| Учителя́ слу́шают дете́й. | учителя́ (nom.) | дете́й (acc. anim.) |
|---|
Plural goals with в and на
Goal-directed в/на still governs accusative; most destination nouns are inanimate and therefore copy nominative plural.
- The plural contrast is often visible at the ending: города́ versus города́х, магази́ны versus магази́нах, заня́тия versus заня́тиях.
- Same semantic test: куда́? selects the goal phrase; где? selects the location phrase.
07.06 Plural goals with в and на
| Goal - accusative plural | Location - prepositional plural |
| е́хать в города́ | жить в города́х |
|---|
| заходи́ть в магази́ны | рабо́тать в магази́нах |
|---|
| лете́ть на острова́ | жить на острова́х |
|---|
| идти́ на заня́тия | быть на заня́тиях |
|---|
Numeral phrases inside accusative
The whole phrase is accusative, but inanimate and animate two-to-four phrases have different internal shapes.
- Animate accusative changes the numeral two-to-four to двух, трёх, четырёх and uses the noun's genitive plural: двух студе́нтов, not *два студе́нта in direct-object meaning.
- Analysis: Case belongs to the entire numeral phrase. The surface noun form inside it follows quantity and animacy syntax.
07.07 Numeral phrases inside accusative
| Phrase type | Inanimate | Animate |
| 2-4 | ви́жу два стола́ | ви́жу двух студе́нтов |
|---|
| 3 | покупа́ю три кни́ги | встреча́ю трёх подру́г |
|---|
| 4 | открыва́ю четы́ре окна́ | зна́ю четырёх враче́й |
|---|
| 5+ | ви́жу пять столо́в | ви́жу пять студе́нтов |
|---|
Time, duration, and accusative prepositions
Plural time spans often use accusative, while an internal numeral controls the noun form.
- The phrase's sentence function and the noun's visible form are not the same question. пять дней is an accusative duration phrase whose noun has the genitive plural shape.
- Spelling and stress: Keep ё and count stress visible: че́рез три го́да, два часа́, четырёх враче́й.
07.08 Time, duration, and accusative prepositions
| Construction | Example | Analysis |
| whole plural span | рабо́тать все выходны́е | accusative plural phrase |
|---|
| two-to-four duration | ждать два часа́ | accusative numeral phrase + count form |
|---|
| five-plus duration | ждать пять дней | accusative numeral phrase + gen. pl. |
|---|
| recurrence | ка́ждые две неде́ли | accusative time frame |
|---|
| че́рез | че́рез два го́да | after/in two years |
|---|
| про | про ру́сских писателей | about Russian writers |
|---|
Agreement gateway in accusative plural
Adjectives and demonstratives mirror the same plural animacy split.
- Inanimate accusative plural adjective forms copy nominative plural; animate forms copy genitive plural. This is an agreement preview, not a full adjective ending lesson.
- Phrase-level check: After forming the noun, scan every dependent word for the same case, number, and animacy requirements.
07.09 Agreement gateway in accusative plural
| Class | Noun | Full phrase |
| inanimate | дома́ | ви́жу э́ти но́вые дома́ |
|---|
| inanimate | кни́ги | покупа́ю интере́сные кни́ги |
|---|
| animate | студе́нтов | ви́жу э́тих но́вых студе́нтов |
|---|
| animate | друзе́й | встреча́ю ста́рых друзе́й |
|---|
Accusative plural assessment
Derive the form from animacy, then account for any numeral inside the phrase.
- Assessment
- Form: ви́деть + столы́, кни́ги, о́кна.
- Form: ви́деть + студе́нты, же́нщины, де́ти, друзья́.
- Contrast goal and location: города́ / города́х.
- Choose the object: Учителя́ слу́шают дете́й.
- Explain why ви́жу ку́кол but организу́ю гру́ппы.
- Answers and explanations
- ви́деть столы́, кни́ги, о́кна: inanimate forms copy nominative plural.
- ви́деть студе́нтов, же́нщин, дете́й, друзе́й: animate forms copy genitive plural.
- е́хать в города́; жить в города́х.
- Я ви́жу двух студе́нтов; Я ви́жу два стола́.
- дете́й is the animate accusative object; учителя́ is nominative subject.
- ку́кла is grammatically animate, while the collective noun гру́ппа is inanimate.
- Ready signal: Continue when accusative plural feels like a selection rule over forms already known, not a new ending table.
- Build: I see two students; I see two tables.
