2.06 Genitive Plural

The major plural formation challenge: zero endings, -ов/-ев, -ей, stem repair, and quantity

Why genitive plural needs its own module

Unlike dative, instrumental, and prepositional plural, genitive plural has several competing endings and frequent stem changes.

  • The same form serves plural absence, larger quantities, dependent reference, genitive prepositions, and - in 2.07 - animate accusative plural.
  • Learning strategy: Store nominative plural + genitive plural as a pair: друзья́ - друзе́й, о́кна - о́кон, зда́ния - зда́ний.

Masculine hard stems: usually -ов

For many masculine nouns ending in a hard consonant, -ов is the productive default.

  • Some masculine groups have zero count forms or lexical exceptions, so -ов is a default, not a guarantee. The ordinary genitive plural of носки́ is носко́в, but чулки́ has чуло́к.
  • Stress: The ending is often stressed in short mobile-stress nouns: столо́в, городо́в, домо́в. Preserve each pattern.

Masculine -ев and -ей patterns

-й often leads to -ев; soft -ь and sibilant stems commonly take -ей.

  • The -ев/-ей choice is partly phonological and partly lexical. Use a dictionary for unusual nouns and always record the plural stem and stress.
  • Do not overcompress: музе́ев and словаре́й are not one interchangeable ending with different spelling. They belong to different stem patterns.

Feminine zero endings and -ей

Many -а/-я nouns lose their nominative ending; feminine -ь normally takes -ей.

  • A zero ending can expose a difficult consonant cluster and trigger a repair vowel, as in де́вушка - де́вушек. Those repairs receive a full page below.
  • Spelling: No soft sign is written at the end of genitive plural луж, туч, ро́щ, or зада́ч. Feminine nominative ночь keeps ь because it is a different form and family.

Neuter zero endings, -ей, and -ий

Hard-stem neuters often have zero; soft stems often take -ей; -ие nouns normally end in -ий.

  • The written -ий in зда́ний contains the plural stem plus a zero-like genitive outcome in the /ij/ pattern; it should be learned as the regular genitive plural of -ие nouns.
  • Ё and stress: имён and времён require ё and final stress. Learning text should never hide these as имен and времен.

Fleeting vowels and stem repair

Zero endings can create impossible or disfavoured clusters, so о or е appears, disappears, or alternates inside the stem.

  • These vowels are not freely predictable from a simple pronunciation rule. They belong to recurring morphological patterns, but the correct vowel and stress must be confirmed lexically.
  • Useful diagnostic: The genitive plural is one of the best forms for exposing a noun's hidden stem structure. Record it early.

Five and above: the digit and teen rules

In nominative and many inanimate accusative quantity phrases, five-or-more selects genitive plural.

  • The numeral phrase as a whole may be accusative while the noun has the genitive plural form: Я ви́жу пять столо́в. Animate two-to-four phrases have an additional accusative pattern in 2.07.
  • Oblique-case warning: After к, с, о, and other oblique-case environments, decline both the numeral and a plural noun: к пяти́ стола́м, с пятью́ кни́гами.

Quantity words and measurement forms

Countable plural sets normally take genitive plural; mass or abstract amounts often take genitive singular.

  • Measurement nouns may have special zero count forms: сто ватт, пять мегаба́йт. килогра́мм permits five килогра́ммов and, in measurement contexts, five килогра́мм. Outside exact measurement, ordinary plural килогра́ммов is expected.
  • Meaning controls number: мно́го книг uses plural because books are counted as individuals; мно́го вре́мени uses singular because time is construed as an amount.

High-frequency irregular forms

The best strategy is a compact active list organised by plural stem.

  • Retrieval bundle: Say лю́ди - люде́й - лю́дям - людьми́ - лю́дях as a family. The stem and stress change are more memorable across the paradigm than in isolated lists.

Genitive plural assessment and decision strategy

Use a default strategy, then check known stem classes and lexical exceptions.

  • Assessment
  • Form: нет + столы́, музе́и, словари́.
  • Form: мно́го + кни́ги, но́чи, моря́, зда́ния.
  • Repair the stems: де́вушки, пи́сьма, о́кна.
  • Choose forms after 23, 25, 112, and 121 using кни́га.
  • Give the genitive plurals: лю́ди, де́ти, друзья́, имена́.
  • Explain мно́го книг versus мно́го вре́мени.
  • Answers and explanations
  • нет столо́в, музе́ев, словаре́й.
  • мно́го книг, ноче́й, море́й, зда́ний.
  • де́вушек, пи́сем, о́кон.
  • 23 кни́ги; 25 книг; 112 книг; 121 кни́га.
  • люде́й, дете́й, друзе́й, имён.
  • Books are construed as countable individuals, so plural; time as an amount, so singular genitive.
  • Ready signal: Proceed when you can produce animate accusative plural bases such as студе́нтов, же́нщин, дете́й, and друзе́й without preview tables.
