2.05 Genitive Singular

Absence, reference, source, possession, small quantities, and restricted partitive forms

The genitive meaning network

Genitive often places one entity relative to another: absent from a domain, belonging to a reference point, coming from a source, or measured as a quantity.

  • Case versus number: нет selects genitive. The speaker still chooses singular нет кни́ги 'there is no book' or plural нет книг 'there are no books'.

Masculine endings -а and -я

Hard consonant stems normally take -а; -й and soft -ь nouns normally take -я.

  • These forms explain the masculine animate accusative learned in 2.04: ви́жу бра́та and ви́жу геро́я copy the genitive singular shapes.
  • Stress is lexical: Compare го́рода but стола́ and словаря́. Do not assume that genitive -а/-я is always stressed or always unstressed.

Neuter endings and -мя nouns

Regular neuters take -а/-я; -мя nouns expand the stem with -мен-.

  • The ending in нет вре́мени is not the ordinary neuter -а/-я pattern. Treat -мя nouns as a small irregular family whose stem reappears in dative, instrumental, and prepositional forms.
  • High-frequency pair: Learn нет вре́мени and значе́ние и́мени as complete phrases; both are common and expose the -мен- stem.

Feminine endings -ы and -и

-а normally becomes -ы; ordinary -я and feminine -ь take -и, with a spelling restriction after seven consonants.

  • After г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, and щ, expected -ы is written -и: кни́ги, ру́чки, му́хи, лу́жи. After ц, -ы remains possible in the ending: у́лицы.
  • Form collision: кни́ги can be nominative plural or genitive singular. Context resolves the case: Э́то кни́ги versus нет кни́ги.

Absence with нет, не было, and не будет

Existential absence is the clearest high-frequency genitive construction.

  • The absent noun is not a nominative subject. The construction is impersonal: нет вре́мени, не́ было по́езда, не бу́дет встре́чи.
  • Number choice: нет по́езда means no train / the train is absent; нет поездо́в means no trains. Negation selects genitive, not plural.

futureне бу́дет + genitiveЗа́втра не бу́дет уро́ка.

Possession, relationships, and part-whole reference

A genitive noun can specify whose entity, which entity, what kind, or how much of a substance.

  • The head noun takes the case required by the wider sentence; the dependent genitive keeps its own relation. Я ви́жу кни́гу студе́нта: кни́гу is accusative, студе́нта is genitive.
  • Order is not ownership alone: Russian noun + genitive covers many 'of' relations. Ask what reference relation the second noun contributes.

У, source, separation, and other genitive prepositions

Prepositions package recurring spatial and abstract relations; learn them with a representative phrase.

  • Critical contrast: с + genitive means 'from/off': с рабо́ты. с + instrumental means 'with': с колле́гой. The case completes the meaning.

One, two-to-four, and the count form

In nominative and many inanimate accusative quantity phrases, numeral shape controls the following noun form.

  • Calling два стола́ simply 'genitive singular' is useful at first but incomplete. It is a counting construction, and a few masculine nouns have special count stress: два часа́ but нет ча́са; два шага́ but длина́ ша́га.
  • Scope warning: The two-to-four shortcut is for nominative/accusative count phrases. In oblique cases the numeral and noun both change: к двум стола́м, с тремя́ кни́гами.

Partitive -у/-ю and genitive under negation

Two advanced genitive phenomena are real but restricted; neither should become an automatic beginner rule.

  • Restricted partitive
  • Some masculine mass nouns permit -у/-ю when an indefinite amount is intended: вы́пить ча́ю, доба́вить са́хару. Ordinary genitive -а/-я remains broadly available: вкус ча́я, нет са́хара. The -у form is lexically and constructionally restricted.
  • Direct object under negation
  • Actual choice also depends on verb, scope, lexical semantics, register, and context. Negation does not mechanically convert every direct object into genitive.
  • Safe beginner anchor: Use нет + genitive for clear absence. Treat object genitive under verbal negation as a later choice with discourse meaning.

accusativeЯ не чита́л э́ту кни́гу.specific or discourse-established object
genitiveЯ не чита́л книг.non-specific, any/no books, stronger absence

Genitive singular assessment

Identify the genitive relation, then form the singular pattern and check stress or lexical restriction.

  • Assessment
  • Form: нет + стол, музе́й, окно́, мо́ре.
  • Form: из + шко́ла, Росси́я; без + дверь.
  • Choose the count forms: 2 стол; 3 кни́га; 4 окно́.
  • Explain два часа́ versus нет ча́са.
  • Explain why negation does not simply 'activate genitive' for every direct object.
  • Answers and explanations
  • нет стола́, музе́я, окна́, мо́ря.
  • из шко́лы, из Росси́и; без две́ри.
  • и́мя геро́я; центр го́рода.
  • два стола́; три кни́ги; четы́ре окна́.
  • The count form has inherited special ending stress in часа́; ordinary genitive singular is ча́са.
  • Object case under verbal negation varies with specificity, scope, verb, and discourse; нет is the categorical absence construction.
  • Ready signal: Continue when you can keep genitive relation, singular reference, counting syntax, and restricted partitive forms analytically separate.
  • Build: the name of the hero; the centre of the city.
