What selects the accusative singular
The accusative commonly presents an entity as a direct object, a spatial goal, or a bounded time expression.
- A verb or preposition governs the case, but the intended relation still matters. в + accusative expresses a goal; в + prepositional expresses a setting.
- Number remains independent: Я чита́ю кни́гу refers to one book. The accusative does not itself mean singular; the speaker chose a singular referent.
04.01 What selects the accusative singular
| Relation | Example | Question |
| direct object | Я чита́ю кни́гу. | what is being read? |
|---|
| spatial goal | Я иду́ в шко́лу. | where to? |
|---|
| time / duration | Я рабо́тал всю неде́лю. | for what span? |
|---|
| accusative preposition | Мы говори́м про кни́гу. | about what? (colloquial про) |
|---|
Feminine -а and -я become -у and -ю
This is the clearest distinct accusative singular ending family.
- Animacy does not change the visible singular form of this family: ви́жу сестру́ and ви́жу сте́ну both use -у. Animacy becomes visible across all genders in the plural.
- Pronunciation: Final unstressed -у/-ю remains a relatively clear [u]-type vowel: кни́гу, неде́лю. Do not reduce it to an English schwa.
04.02 Feminine -а and -я become -у and -ю
| Nominative | Build | Accusative |
| кни́га | книг- + -у | чита́ю кни́гу |
|---|
| шко́ла | школ- + -у | иду́ в шко́лу |
|---|
| неде́ля | недел- + -ю | всю неде́лю |
|---|
| Мари́я | Мариj- + -ю | ви́жу Мари́ю |
|---|
| ста́тья | статьj- + -ю | чита́ю статью́ |
|---|
Neuter accusative equals nominative
Neuter singular nouns normally keep the nominative form in the accusative.
- An unchanged form is still accusative when syntax selects it. In Я ви́жу мо́ре, мо́ре is the direct object; in Мо́ре споко́йно, it is the subject.
- Do not search for a visible ending: Case can be expressed by the construction even when two forms coincide. This coincidence is called syncretism.
04.03 Neuter accusative equals nominative
| Nominative | Accusative phrase | Equality |
| окно́ | откры́ть окно́ | acc. = nom. |
|---|
| мо́ре | ви́деть мо́ре | acc. = nom. |
|---|
| зда́ние | ви́деть зда́ние | acc. = nom. |
|---|
| и́мя | знать и́мя | acc. = nom. |
|---|
Masculine inanimate accusative equals nominative
A masculine inanimate singular direct object normally has no visible change.
- Compare Стол стои́т зде́сь, where стол is nominative subject, with Я ви́жу стол, where стол is accusative object. The verb and semantic role disambiguate.
- Animacy split: This unchanged pattern belongs to masculine inanimate singular nouns. Masculine animate nouns use the form introduced on the next page.
04.04 Masculine inanimate accusative equals nominative
| Nominative | Accusative phrase | Result |
| стол | ви́жу стол | unchanged |
|---|
| музе́й | посеща́ю музе́й | unchanged |
|---|
| слова́рь | покупа́ю слова́рь | unchanged |
|---|
| го́род | люблю́ го́род | unchanged |
|---|
Masculine animate accusative copies genitive
For masculine animate singular nouns, accusative has the same form as genitive singular: usually -а or -я.
- Use these as accusative patterns now. Module 2.05 derives the same shapes inside the full genitive singular system.
- Formula: masculine animate accusative singular = genitive singular form; masculine inanimate accusative singular = nominative singular form
04.05 Masculine animate accusative copies genitive
| Nominative | Accusative | Visible pattern |
| студе́нт | ви́жу студе́нта | -а |
|---|
| брат | встреча́ю бра́та | -а |
|---|
| геро́й | зна́ю геро́я | -я |
|---|
| учи́тель | слу́шаю учи́теля | -я |
|---|
Animacy is grammatical, not simply biological
Meaning predicts the core, but Russian classifies some representations and collectives in ways a biology test would miss.
- Feminine singular does not visibly diagnose animacy, so the plural comparison is decisive: ви́жу ку́кол (animate pattern) but ви́жу гру́ппы (inanimate pattern).
- Learner rule: Start from human/animal meaning, then store the smaller set of lexical exceptions. Do not ask only 'Is it alive?'
04.06 Animacy is grammatical, not simply biological
| Usually animate | Usually inanimate |
| people and animals: студе́нт, ко́шка | objects and substances: стол, са́хар |
|---|
| dolls and personified figures: ку́кла, матрёшка | plants: дуб, ро́за |
|---|
| chess/card figures: коро́ль, ферзь | collectives: наро́д, толпа́, гру́ппа |
|---|
| dead-person nouns: поко́йник | труп 'corpse' |
|---|
Verb government and direct objects
Learn a verb together with the case pattern of its complements.
- Store frames: Record ви́деть кого́? что? + accusative and помога́ть кому́? чему́? + dative, not only English translations.
- What to notice: Government is lexical. Помога́ть takes dative, not accusative: помога́ть бра́ту. Ждать permits genitive and accusative under different lexical, semantic, and stylistic conditions, so it is a poor first model for a single 'accusative trigger' rule.
04.07 Verb government and direct objects
| Verb | Accusative frame | Example |
| ви́деть | see whom/what | ви́деть сестру́ / дом |
|---|
| чита́ть | read what | чита́ть кни́гу |
|---|
| покупа́ть | buy what | покупа́ть слова́рь |
|---|
| люби́ть | love whom/what | люби́ть бра́та / му́зыку |
|---|
| знать | know whom/what | знать учи́теля / го́род |
|---|
| встреча́ть | meet whom | встреча́ть Мари́ю |
|---|
Goal-directed в and на
Use accusative when в or на introduces the endpoint or goal of directed motion.
- Diagnostic question: куда́? 'to where?' favours goal accusative; где? 'where?' favours location prepositional.
- Common mistake: Do not reduce the contrast to 'movement versus no movement'. Бе́гать в па́рке describes running located in a park; в парк would make the park the destination.
04.08 Goal-directed в and на
| Goal - accusative | Setting - prepositional |
| иду́ в шко́лу | учу́сь в шко́ле |
|---|
| еду́ в го́род | живу́ в го́роде |
|---|
| иду́ в музе́й | рабо́таю в музе́е |
|---|
| иду́ на рабо́ту | я на рабо́те |
|---|
| лечу́ на о́стров | живу́ на о́строве |
|---|
Time, duration, and accusative prepositions
Accusative singular also appears in common temporal and prepositional frames.
- Some time nouns remain unchanged because their accusative equals nominative: ка́ждый день. Feminine forms expose the case: всю неде́лю.
- Case does not equal one English preposition: Russian про and о both express topic but govern different cases: про кни́гу (accusative), о кни́ге (prepositional).
04.09 Time, duration, and accusative prepositions
| Frame | Example | Meaning |
| bare duration | рабо́тать всю неде́лю | work all week |
|---|
| frequency unit | ка́ждый день | every day |
|---|
| в + time | в понеде́льник | on Monday |
|---|
| на + planned span | на неде́лю | for a week |
|---|
| че́рез + acc. | че́рез мину́ту | in/after a minute |
|---|
| про + acc. | про кни́гу | about the book (neutral-colloquial) |
|---|
Accusative singular assessment
First decide object, goal, or time; then apply gender, pattern, and animacy.
- Assessment
- Form the direct objects: кни́га, мо́ре, стол.
- Form the direct objects: студе́нт, геро́й, Мари́я.
- Contrast destination and location with музе́й.
- Correct: Я ви́жу учи́тель.
- Explain why ви́жу стол and Стол стои́т contain identical forms with different cases.
- Give one grammatical animacy exception in each direction.
- Answers and explanations
- чита́ть кни́гу; ви́деть мо́ре; ви́деть стол.
- ви́деть студе́нта; встреча́ть геро́я; ви́деть Мари́ю.
- иду́ в музе́й; я в музе́е.
- Я ви́жу учи́теля: masculine animate accusative copies genitive singular.
- Masculine inanimate accusative and nominative are syncretic; syntax and semantic role identify the case.
- For example ку́кла is grammatically animate; наро́д is grammatically inanimate.
- Ready signal: Continue when you can explain every form through relation + number + noun profile, not by memorising one undifferentiated accusative column.
