What the noun system encodes
A Russian noun form packages lexical identity with number and case; gender and animacy help select the pattern.
- The nominative singular is the form normally used for dictionary headwords: дом, кни́га, окно́, слова́рь. It is not an ending that Russian adds; it is one cell in a larger paradigm.
- Build: case + number + lexical pattern + spelling + stress = the usable noun form
01.01 What the noun system encodes
| Property | Question | Example |
| case | What relation in the sentence? | кни́га as subject |
|---|
| number | One or more? | кни́га / кни́ги |
|---|
| gender | Which agreement class? | но́вая кни́га |
|---|
| animacy | Which accusative pattern? | вижу студе́нта |
|---|
| declension | Which ending family? | кни́га → кни́ги |
|---|
| stress | Which syllable is prominent? | окно́ → о́кна |
|---|
Subject and default form
The nominative most often marks the syntactic subject, but word order alone does not identify it.
- In Студе́нт чита́ет, студе́нт is the subject and appears in the nominative. In Кни́га лежи́т зде́сь, кни́га is the subject. Russian can move constituents for information structure, so an early noun is not automatically the subject.
- Default use: Nominative also appears on labels, lists, dictionary entries, and isolated answers: Что э́то? - Музе́й.
01.02 Subject and default form
| Sentence | Nominative subject | Reason |
| Студе́нт чита́ет. | студе́нт | the student performs the action |
|---|
| Кни́га лежи́т зде́сь. | кни́га | the book has the described location |
|---|
| На столе́ лежи́т кни́га. | кни́га | case, not first position, identifies the subject |
|---|
Naming and the zero present-tense copula
Russian normally omits present-tense быть 'to be' between a subject and a noun predicate.
- Это дом means 'This is a house'. Я студе́нт means 'I am a student'. Both дом and студе́нт are nominative because the second noun identifies or classifies the first in a present-tense statement.
- Later contrast: Past and future classification commonly use instrumental: Он был врачо́м. That pattern belongs to 2.11; do not replace the present form Он врач.
01.03 Naming and the zero present-tense copula
| Pattern | Russian | Interpretation |
| э́то + noun | Э́то кни́га. | This is a book. |
|---|
| subject + noun | Она́ врач. | She is a doctor. |
|---|
| place + dash + noun | Москва́ - столи́ца Росси́и. | Moscow is the capital of Russia. |
|---|
Recognising masculine nouns
Most masculine nouns end in a consonant, -й, or masculine -ь; nouns referring to males may instead end in -а or -я.
- A zero ending is a real grammatical pattern: дом has a consonant-final stem and no visible nominative singular ending. Do not describe the final consonant as the ending.
- Agreement test: э́тот но́вый музе́й; мой слова́рь; хоро́ший па́па. Agreement reveals grammatical gender more reliably than translation.
01.04 Recognising masculine nouns
| Visible ending | Examples | Learner action |
| consonant / zero ending | дом, студе́нт, врач | treat as the main masculine pattern |
|---|
| -й | музе́й, геро́й | store the stem as й-related/soft |
|---|
| -ь | слова́рь, учи́тель | check gender; ь alone does not decide |
|---|
| -а / -я referring to a male | па́па, дя́дя, мужчи́на | masculine agreement, -а/-я declension |
|---|
Recognising feminine nouns
The main feminine signals are -а, -я, and feminine -ь.
- The soft sign does not itself mean 'feminine'. Compare masculine слова́рь and feminine тетра́дь. Learn a soft-sign noun with an agreement word: мой слова́рь, моя́ тетра́дь.
- Spelling clue: A final ж, ш, ч, or щ plus ь often marks a feminine noun: ночь, мышь, вещь. Masculine нож, врач, плащ have no ь.
01.05 Recognising feminine nouns
| Pattern | Examples | Notes |
| -а | кни́га, шко́ла, А́нна | highly productive feminine pattern |
|---|
| -я | неде́ля, зе́мля, Мари́я | soft or /j/-related stem |
|---|
| feminine -ь | ночь, дверь, тетра́дь | third-declension pattern |
|---|
Recognising neuter nouns
Most neuter nouns end in -о, -е, or -ё; several smaller classes require a stored pattern.
- Grammatical gender is a word-class property, not a judgement about the real-world object. окно́ and мо́ре are neuter because of their agreement and declension behaviour.
- Rare item: дитя́ 'child' is neuter and irregular. Everyday plural reference normally uses де́ти, the plural of ребёнок in the modern lexical system.
01.06 Recognising neuter nouns
| Pattern | Examples | Behaviour |
| -о | окно́, сло́во | main hard-stem neuter class |
|---|
| -е / -ё | мо́ре, по́ле, ружьё | soft or /j/-related class |
|---|
| -ие | зда́ние, зада́ние | special spelling in prepositional singular |
|---|
| -мя | вре́мя, и́мя | irregular -мен- stem in oblique forms |
|---|
Gender exceptions and human reference
Form predicts much, but agreement can follow lexical class or the person being described.
- па́па, дя́дя, мужчи́на, ю́ноша are masculine although they decline like nouns in -а/-я.
- Common-gender nouns such as у́мница, сирота́, and колле́га can take masculine or feminine agreement according to the referent.
- Profession nouns may be grammatically masculine while referring to a woman: но́вый врач пришла́. Usage and register affect the agreement pattern.
- Indeclinable personal nouns take gender from meaning: э́тот конферансье́; э́та мада́м.
- Do not guess silently: When gender is not recoverable from the ending, use a dictionary or a reliable agreement example.
01.07 Gender exceptions and human reference
| Noun | Referent | Possible frame |
| у́мница | male | Он тако́й у́мница. |
|---|
| у́мница | female | Она́ така́я у́мница. |
|---|
| врач | female | Врач пришла́. |
|---|
Declension families as usable patterns
Traditional labels are useful, but learners should attach them to visible form-building families.
- Better memory bundle: Store a new noun as gender + animacy + nominative singular + genitive singular + nominative plural + genitive plural. Those diagnostic forms expose most irregular behaviour.
01.08 Declension families as usable patterns
| Learner family | Traditional label | Nominative singular |
| -а/-я family | first declension | кни́га, неде́ля, па́па |
|---|
| consonant/-й/-ь m.; -о/-е n. | second declension | дом, музе́й, слова́рь, окно́, мо́ре |
|---|
| feminine -ь family | third declension | ночь, дверь, тетра́дь |
|---|
| mixed / irregular | heteroclitic | вре́мя, и́мя, путь |
|---|
| adjectival | adjectival declension | рабо́чий, столо́вая |
|---|
| unchanging | indeclinable | пальто́, метро́, такси́ |
|---|
Spelling, stress, and pronunciation compass
Russian spelling preserves morphological distinctions that casual listening may blur.
- Say forms as phrases: Practise э́то окно́, но́вое окно́, здесь окно́. Prepositions and unstressed words join a larger sound group in connected speech.
- What to notice: Stress in Russian is mobile and lexical. Do not infer every form from one universal stress rule: окно́ - о́кна, but го́род - города́.
01.09 Spelling, stress, and pronunciation compass
| Feature | Example | What to notice |
| stress | окно́ | the acute mark identifies the prominent syllable |
|---|
| ё | ребёнок | ё is always stressed; print it in learning material |
|---|
| vowel reduction | окно́ ≈ [акно́] | unstressed о is not pronounced as a full stressed [o] |
|---|
| softness | угол / у́голь | ь can distinguish consonant quality and words |
|---|
| final devoicing | друг ≈ [друк] | spelling keeps г; related forms reveal it |
|---|
Nominative singular assessment
Identify function, gender, and pattern before trying to name an ending.
- Assessment
- Find the nominative subject: На столе́ лежи́т тетра́дь.
- Give the gender and family of слова́рь.
- Give the gender and family of па́па.
- Complete: Э́то ___. (museum)
- Explain why окно́ and мо́ре belong to the same broad declension family.
- Name the diagnostic bundle recommended for a new noun.
- Answers and explanations
- тетра́дь: it is not introduced by a preposition and controls the verb as subject.
- Masculine, second-declension / masculine soft-sign pattern.
- Masculine gender, but the -а/-я / first-declension ending family.
- Э́то музе́й.
- Both are neuter members of the broad second-declension system, though their visible stems differ.
- Gender, animacy, nominative singular, genitive singular, nominative plural, genitive plural, and stress behaviour.
- Ready signal: Continue when you can classify an unfamiliar noun without treating its last letter as the whole explanation.
