Class I present forms use the -е / -ё family.
- я and они may show -у/-ут
- Stressed endings preserve ё
- Present stems may be transparent or alternating

Do not force all Type I verbs through one infinitive rule.
- Find the present stem
- Choose the person ending
- Apply spelling
- Check stress
How do I know which type a verb is?
The infinitive is a clue, not a guarantee. Finite forms are the safest diagnostic.
- Many -ать, -ять, and -еть verbs are Type I
- Type I diagnostic: ты -ешь/-ёшь and они -ют/-ут
- Compare verified читать: читаешь / читают
- Exceptions exist, so confirm unfamiliar verbs from stored forms
