The adjective's place in the system
Long agreement morphology is shared by several categories, so form alone does not prove 'adjective'.
- Lexical adjectives name properties or relations. Participles retain a verbal event relation; determiner/pronominal words identify or quantify reference; ordinals locate order; adverbs and predicatives do not agree like attributes.
| Category | Example | Defining contribution |
|---|---|---|
| lexical adjective | но́вая кни́га | property/recency |
| participle | неда́вно изда́нная кни́га | result of publishing event |
| determiner/pronominal | э́та кни́га | deictic identification |
| ordinal | пе́рвая кни́га | order in a series |
| adverb | бы́стро чита́ть | manner of event |
| predicative | Мне интере́сно. | state/evaluation without agreement |
