Multiple adjectives: scope, order, and coordination
Russian adjective order is flexible but not meaningless: closeness to the noun, contrast, rhythm, focus, and semantic grouping all matter.
- Coordinate adjectives describe parallel properties and may take a comma; layered non-coordinate modifiers build one hierarchical phrase without a comma.
| Structure | Example | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| layered | но́вый ру́сский уче́бник | new [Russian textbook] |
| coordinate | интере́сный, поле́зный курс | interesting and useful |
| single evaluation + relation | отли́чная де́тская кни́га | excellent [children's book] |
| contrastive order | ру́сский но́вый уче́бник | marked focus/contrast |
| repeated agreement | в но́вом ру́сском уче́бнике | both copy case |
