Instrumental prepositions and position
над, под, пе́ред, за, and ме́жду use instrumental for a static spatial relation or reference point.
- With dynamic placement, под and за can govern accusative: положи́ть кни́гу под стол. Static location uses instrumental: кни́га лежи́т под столо́м.
- Motion is not enough: The contrast is endpoint/path placement versus static relation: за дом 'to behind the house' versus за до́мом 'behind the house'.
