Profession, role, and predicate instrumental

After быть in past/future and after verbs of becoming or working as, Russian commonly uses instrumental for the role or state.

  • Nominative predicates remain possible in some identificational and stylistic environments, but instrumental is the core learner target for temporary roles, change, and predicates after past/future быть.
  • Time contrast: Я студе́нт now; Я был студе́нтом last year. The case contrast is constructional, not simply 'person versus object'.
