Lesson 6 of 10

Animacy is grammatical, not simply biological

Meaning predicts the core, but Russian classifies some representations and collectives in ways a biology test would miss.

  • Feminine singular does not visibly diagnose animacy, so the plural comparison is decisive: ви́жу ку́кол (animate pattern) but ви́жу гру́ппы (inanimate pattern).
  • Learner rule: Start from human/animal meaning, then store the smaller set of lexical exceptions. Do not ask only 'Is it alive?'
