Lesson 5 of 10

Neuter zero endings, -ей, and -ий

Hard-stem neuters often have zero; soft stems often take -ей; -ие nouns normally end in -ий.

  • The written -ий in зда́ний contains the plural stem plus a zero-like genitive outcome in the /ij/ pattern; it should be learned as the regular genitive plural of -ие nouns.
  • Ё and stress: имён and времён require ё and final stress. Learning text should never hide these as имен and времен.
