Grammatical animacy at the edges
Plural morphology is the best diagnostic for nouns whose meaning and grammar do not line up transparently.
- Some nouns vary by sense, register, or specialist usage. When the plural accusative is uncertain, consult a dictionary or corpus example instead of extending a biological rule.
